Remote Online Notary is not available in every state – is it available in your state?

Although there may be a notary public in every state, not every state is approved to offer Remote Online Notarization (reference your state’s requirements for becoming a RON).

Remote Online Notary is available in about 34 states at the time of this post.

Requirements to becoming a Remote Online Notary are (reference your state’s requirements for becoming a RON):

  • 18 year or older
  • Resident of the state
  • No felony convictions

Steps to becoming a RON are (reference your state’s requirements for becoming a RON):

  • Become a traditional notary public
  • Choos a RON provider
  • Get approved to do RON

Remote Online Notary is generally a traditional notary public who has been given permission to also do notarizations remotely. You must become a traditional notary first, once approved you will then be requested to choose an online provider to perform online notarizations.

The online provider must offer a secure and safe environment to meet the signer via 2 way audiovisual technology, allow to sign documents digitally, and have created rules and regulations approved by the state to support such a platform. So there are companies and providers to help facilitate these transactions in your state through a list of approved vendors (reference your state’s requirements for becoming a RON).

There is a long list of providers and each has a set of requirements, rules, and fees.

For a full list and breakdown of these vendors please subscribe to my blog and get a FREE list of RON providers along with the fees and requirements.

Once you’ve picked a provider that will assist with performing your remote notarization you would then apply through your state to become a Remote Online Notary.

Some states may require additional courses or training, or may also require additional insurance or bonds in order to perform remote notarization.

It is said that the NNA is considered the mecca of notarization. It’s where you can find all the latest laws and requirements on becoming a Notary Public.

You can find more information on becoming a Remote Online Notary by going to the Nation Notary Association and looking up your state.
