Let’s discuss what is a Remote Online Notary, and the 3 Benefits of Being an Online Notary.

This way you can consider if this is a perfect entrepreneur side hustle for you.

One of the best hustles of an entrepreneur is being a Remote Online Notary.

Essentially in order to become a Remote Online Notary, it’s important to understand what is a Notary Public?

Before we begin let’s quickly go over what a notary public is. A Notary Public is an official of integrity appointed by the state government – typically by the secretary of state – to serve the public as an impartial witness in performing a variety of official fraud-deterrent acts related to the signing of important documents.

If you weren’t aware a Notary Public takes part in some of the most important transactions of a person’s life, like when your selling a home, buying a home, whether it’s your first, second, or even your third home, a power of attorney, change of address, a bank loan, or renew passports.

A Notary Public is pretty important and a pretty cool job if you ask me.

Now that we’ve gone over what a Notary Public is now let’s discuss what is a Remote Online Notary. A Remote Online notarization (commonly referred to as a RON) refers to the process of having a state-licensed notary public notarize a document remotely through the use of electronic signature, identity verification, audio-visual and electronic notarial journal, and record-keeping technologies.

What that entails is that a Remote Online Notary can notarize documents online instead of being face to face, it’s done over audio-video chat and signed electronically and sealed digitally.

Let’s look at a traditional Notary Public vs a Remote Online Notary side by side.

A Traditional Notary Public meets with the signed face to face; typically that happens by the Notary coming to you or you going to the Notary Public. There will be a physical document that will need to be notarized, the document will be physically signed with an ink pen and will be physically stamped by the Notary.

A Remote Online Notary will meet completely remote via audio-visual technology, think video chat, you don’t have to be in the same room, in the state, or even the same country. The document will no longer be a physical document, it will be an electronic document, in the form of a PDF that will be signed. Both signature and stamp will all be digital, there will be an electronic signature and the stamp will be an electronic notarial seal or electronic notarial stamp. So pretty much the same gestures will be used but instead will be done remotely and done electronically.

These are the differences between Traditional Notary work and Remote Notary work.

Benefits of being a Remote Online Notary (RON)

1. Work from home

Let’s be honest, this is the age of working from home and working remotely, it appears since 2020 there has been a wave of people that no longer want to go in the office or travel. People want convenience and the comfort of their own homes. This saves on gas, and the wear and tear on your car.

For Traditional Notaries this is a huge win, they don’t have to print documents and there is no traveling required.

2. Set Your Own Schedule

As a Remote Online Notary or simply being a Notary Public is it considered to be an entrepreneur, you are practically your own boss. You set your own hours, determine when you work, and even set your own schedule.

3. Notarize documents for people in ANY state or country as a Remote Online Notary

As a traditional Notary, you can only notarize documents within the same state you are commissioned in. As a Remote Online Notary as long as you reside in the state you were commissioned in, you can notarize documents for anyone in any state or in another country.

It doesn’t matter where the signer is, here is an example, if you are commissioned as Remote Online Notary in Colorado you can notarize a document for someone in California, in Florida, or in Europe.

As a Remote Online Notary, your clientele can be much larger than a traditional Notary since the person you are notarizing the document for can be anywhere.

It is my understanding that Remote Online Notarization is here to stay and is the way of the future.

That is why I became a Remote Online Notary in my state.
